About The Production

The two day production for The Burden began the morning of July 5th, 2008. While most of the country spent the long holiday weekend relaxing while watching fireworks and having barbecues, the film's cast and crew arrived on set bright and early Saturday morning to prepare for two long days of shooting.

July 2008 was a record breaking month of heat in Colorado, beating the record for most consecutive days of 90 degrees or warmer weather, previously set in 1901. And the cast and crew felt it; while the entire shoot took place indoors, at least sheltering them from the sun, sound recording required that the air conditioning be turned off and all windows kept shut, least the track be muddied with excess background noise. The weekend followed a pattern; the team would shoot a scene, and as soon as a camera or light move was required someone would run to the thermostat, blast the AC and turn on a fan, and cool off the room as long as possible, until the next shot was set up and the noise had to be cut again.

Gina Di Tullio did an amazing job on the film. The only cast member required to be present for the entire two days of shooting, the shooting schedule held a high demand on her, requiring her to move from light hearted scenes to more emotionally charged ones and back within a relatively short timeframe. The role was quite a departure from her first with Twelve Monkeys Dancing, as the resident bad guy Sal in the 2007 feature Different Kinds. Ashley Henkle, Kasha Fauscett and Bethany Schatz rounded out the cast, all delivering spectacularperformances despite the uncomfortable shooting environment caused by the heat.

In addition to being a holiday weekend, Saturday also happened to be Damon Marten's birthday. Ever the dedicated DP, Damon spent his birthday on his feet, shooting for 12 hours in the sweltering heat. Since he put the film first, choosing to work rather than spend his birthday doing something more relaxing and less stressful, the cast and crew celebrated by surprising him with a birthday cake after dinner that night. He even took a whole 10 minutes to enjoy it, but afterwards was the first one back on his feet, ready to continue production.
